Swedish Sedona...the most beautiful massage in the world!

Picture

Meet Susan Pomfret MA, LMT

"I bring experience and skill to the table!"
“I dance the beauty of the body” is my motto. What this means is that, while I look for and ease tense areas, I also help to create a sense of well-being…putting the body “back together” as well as “taking it apart”. In the privacy of your own home, you can relax deeply knowing you don’t have to go out and face the world (or traffic) until you feel ready. In addition to my massage practice, I am a massage teacher and program director at a community college. I bring strong technique and a wealth of experience to the table.

                                            SERVICES

Massage is my passion, both as a science and an art. In addition to creating a sense of well-being, my educated hands assess the causes of problems and address their solutions. I have taught musculoskeletal anatomy, pathology, and numerous massage classes including Swedish Sedona, reflexology, deep tissue, pregnancy, and elder touch. I am the director of the Massage Therapy Program at Central Arizona College. I have worked at spas in The Phoenician, The Ritz, and Camelback Inn. I bring experience and skill to the massage table.

Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

My work is unique because of the experience I bring to the table. I trained as an instructor shortly after completing my basic training. Teaching has required that I stay current. I have an in-depth understanding of anatomy and my hands are skilled in assessment. Working with clients, an interest in psychology was born. I have a BS in psychology and a Master's in organizational development.

What do you like most about your job?

Whether I am giving a massage or helping a student achieve excellence, I always love the feeling that I am helping others.

If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

Massage therapists are considered to be the most idealistic of all health care professions. Everyone is always happy to see us coming!

What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

While many massages I give are just blissfully relaxing, often we encounter problem areas that need work. My clients appreciate that when they ask "what's going on?" I can discuss the structures involved. The session becomes a "living anatomy lesson". People tend to mend better when they understand what is happening in their bodies.

                                            SWEDISH SEDONA

Swedish Sedona is a unique variation on Swedish massage, the foundation of Western massage. The Swedish massage system was developed by Pehr Henrik Ling in the early 19th century in Sweden. Although Swedish strokes are quite effective, they may be rough and disjointed. The Sedona part of the name comes from the massage developed by me, Susan Pomfret, while working at Five Star Resorts in Arizona. I combined Swedish strokes with the flow of West Coast massage. Added to this are techniques designed to be effective in the spa setting, including draping and working with a variety of clients for just one or two times.

Using Swedish Sedona, the therapist can go deep without causing discomfort. The client feels ‘taken apart’ and ‘put back together’.  For the receiver, Swedish Sedona is smooth and flowing with a wide range of pressures. For the person giving the massage, the movement is effortless and energizing.

Understanding a few simple concepts about body mechanics will create comfort for the person giving the massage. Understanding a few simple concepts about organizing the presentation of the massage will give form and sense to the massage experience and create a feeling of wholeness for the receiver.

Swedish Sedona is an excellent method for:

  • Laypeople who want to massage friends and family in a polished and caring way.  Couples will enjoy learning a new way to care for each other.

  • Massage schools looking for a complete system to maximize student learning. Swedish Sedona is a perfect signature foundational massage that puts a brand of excellence on your graduates.

  • Spas and resorts desiring that a high-quality, consistent product be offered to all guests. And Swedish Sedona is an excellent refresher for individual  therapists who need to refine their touch.

  • Established therapists who wish to increase the effectiveness of their Swedish massage, learn new routines and improve their body-mechanics.

Performing a Swedish massage is the first step in a job interview for spas and resorts. Use the Swedish Sedona DVD to brush up skills before applying  for jobs.

                                                HOW TO USE

The DVD:

  • The Basic and Advanced Protocols offer full-body routines. Learn each lesson, area by area, then put them together to create a complete experience.

  • Verbal, as well as visual instruction walks the student through every movement and each body region and transition, building to the full-body massage. Once each stroke and area has been mastered, mute the sound and play your favorite music to enrich the massage experience more fully  for both the massager and the receiver.

  • Emphasis is placed on body mechanics throughout the massage. Using the Dance Stance, the massager is graceful and energized, minimizing the chance of injury and fatigue.

The text:

  • The text provides the information presented on the film with some additional information.

  • Protocols are presented on individual pages, making them easier to use as a visual guide when practicing.  Students may tear them out and place them in plastic sheet protectors to use as “cheat sheets” while practicing.

  • Teachers can write the bold-print stroke sequences on the board to help students stay on-track when practicing.
